Common classification methods and functions of resistors

A resistor is an electronic component that limits the flow of current, and its main function is to impede the flow of current in a circuit. Resistance is usually made of conductive materials, and its resistance value depends on the characteristics, shape, and specification of the plastic. The unit of resistance is ohm (Ω), which represents the ratio of voltage to current in a circuit based on both sides of the resistance. A resistor is a common resistive element that typically consists of one or more fixed or variable resistors.

The main characteristics of resistors are resistance value, power, accuracy, temperature coefficient, etc. The resistance of a resistor is usually marked with a color ring coding method. The higher the accuracy, the greater the number of tone rings. The power of the resistor is usually a tile (W) indicating the maximum power that the resistor can withstand.

Resistance can be selected based on different classification criteria. The following are some common classification methods:

Classification by resistance size: Resistance can be divided into high resistance and low resistance.

Resistance can be divided into transistor resistance, metal film resistance, carbon film resistance, electrolyte resistance, etc.

Classification by use: Resistance can be divided into fixed value resistance, variable resistance, power resistance, precision resistance, etc.

According to structure classification: Resistance can be divided into linear resistance, surface mount resistance, ceramic resistance, resistance insulator, etc.

Classification by temperature coefficient: Resistance can be divided into positive temperature coefficient resistance and negative temperature coefficient resistance.

Classification by working environment: Resistance can be divided into normal temperature resistance, high temperature resistance, low temperature resistance, etc.

Classification by compressive strength: Resistance can be divided into general resistance and high-voltage resistance.

Classification by accuracy: Resistance can be divided into general resistance, high-precision resistance, and extremely high-precision resistance.

According to the classification of the application site: Resistance can be divided into general resistance and special resistance, such as lightning protection, antistatic, heat resistance, corrosion resistance, and other characteristics.

The main functions of resistors are as follows:

Resistance current limiting: Resistance can limit the current in a circuit by impeding the flow of current, thereby protecting other components from excessive current damage.

Voltage sharing: Resistors can divide the voltage into different voltages in order to use other components in the circuit.

Signal adjustment: In electronic circuits, resistors can be used to adjust parameters such as signal range, frequency, and phase to meet circuit requirements.

Heat: Resistance generates a certain amount of heat through electric current, which can be used for heating equipment, drying equipment, electric furnaces, and other equipment.

Resistance heating: Electric current generates heat through a resistance to achieve the purpose of heating objects. This method is widely used in industrial production.
