How to distinguish thin film resistance from thick film resistance? What is the difference?

Definition of thin film resistance and thick film resistance

1. Film resistance

Thin film resistor is a kind of high-precision resistor. It is made by evaporating a certain resistivity material onto the surface of insulating material by the method of quasi-evaporation. Generally, the common insulating material of this kind of resistor is ceramic substrate. We often refer to high-precision low temperature drift chip resistors as thin-film chip resistors, including common one-thousandth resistance and one-thousandth resistance.

2. Thick film resistor

Thick-film patch resistor, also known as chip fixed resistor, is printed by thick-film technology. This resistor has a variety of shapes, including strip, curve, rectangle, etc. It is mainly used in the manufacture of power resistance and precision resistance. The resistance is resistant to humidity, high temperature, small temperature coefficient, small size and light weight.

Conventional thick film chip resistance production process: raw material preparation substrate slurry screen → front and back conductor printing → conductor sintering and drying → resistance printing → resistance body sintering → glass layer printing → glass layer sintering → laser cutting → protective layer printing → protective layer hardening → character code printing → slitting → end silver/splash plating → end hardening → granulation/electroplating → testing → tape packaging.

How to distinguish between thin film resistance and thick film resistance

Thin film resistor and thick film resistor are widely used. Thin film resistor is the mainstream chip precision resistor, but how to distinguish them?

1. According to film thickness

The film thickness of thick film resistor is generally greater than 10 μ m. The film thickness is less than 10 μ m. Most are less than 1 μ m;

2. According to manufacturing process

Thick film resistors generally adopt screen printing process, while thin film resistors adopt vacuum evaporation, magnetron sputtering and other process methods.

3. According to accuracy

Generally, the precision of thick film resistors is not high, most of which are 1%, 5%, 10%, etc., while thin film resistors can achieve 0.01% accuracy, 0.1% accuracy, etc;

4. According to temperature coefficient

The temperature coefficient of thick film resistance is difficult to control and generally large, but the film resistance can achieve very low temperature coefficient, such as 5PPM/℃, 10PPM/℃. The resistance value changes very little with the temperature, and the resistance value is stable and reliable, so the price is relatively expensive compared with thick film resistance. Therefore, when the temperature coefficient and accuracy requirements are high, the resistance of thin film process can be used. If the resistance of thick film process is generally required, it can be used.
